About 3 years ago, the obsession began...an obsession with a group that was shared both by me and by my daughter, Sierra.  That group was Relient K.  It started with a song...a Christmas song.  Yes, a Christmas song.

You see, we went to a concert.  It was a Toby Mac concert and it had, as opening bands, Family Force 5 and Relient K.  Now we were there for Toby Mac and all I remember from the other 2 bands was FF5 was VERY loud and obnoxious and RK was pretty ok, but they played a Christmas song that Sierra and I LOVED.  It was Sleigh Ride, a classic Christmas song, but we liked how they did it.  We went home and began to look into this group and so the obsession began.

With the obsession began a desire to see them in concert.  I was bummed that we did not know their stuff before the previous concert.  We waited, quite impatiently, for years for them to go on tour and COME HERE!!  Imagine my incredible surprise when my husband called me to say he got an update from House of Blues about upcoming events and who did he see....RELIENT K.  I told him, buy 2 tickets IMMEDIATELY (I'll eat beans for a week if necessary!).  He did and last night, Sierra and I headed out to the concert we had been waiting for for a VERY long time!!

There were 3 opening bands:  House of Heroes, William Beckett, Hellogoodbye.  I did not know a lot about these bands before hand...here are my thoughts.

House of Heroes:  I loved their rock edge, their look and their energy.  I had heard of them before and seem to be an up and coming band.  Sierra looked back at me several times and said she really liked them and wanted to look into their music later.  Their lyrics seemed more on a Christian level and I was genuinely impressed.

For the other 2 bands, I need to just say this...there were Youth groups at this concert.  The crowd was mainly made up of teens and very young adults.  Relient K is not known for being the most outwardly Christian of groups, but you find their albums in Christian book stores and their songs are generally either Christian or as clean (and fun) as you can get.  That being said:

William Beckett:  I was very disappointed in his performance.  One of his songs had the S- word throughout.  He also had songs about one night stands which I felt was inappropriate.  Yes, this was the House of Blues, but it was also an all-age event.  I saw young kids there and, like I said, a lot of teens.  I was disappointed in Relient K for adding him to their tour and disappointed in this guy.  His music was not that great...he is a one man show...just him, his guitars and his computer.  I did not like his style and throughout the night, he constantly repeated his name over and over again.  I stood next to one man who was there with his daughter and he said...I didn't quite get that name.

Hellogoodbye:  What ENERGY this band had.  I had never heard of them before and Sierra and I both agree that we want to look into them further.  They were VERY fun and had great camaraderie.  My ONLY issue with them .... ok, a couple issues.  One, the bass player dropped the F-bomb.  Two, the bass player looked drunk (and he was setting up the stage while holding a mostly drunk bottle of wine.  And three, I was curious about the bass player kissing the guitar player on the cheek.  Kind of grossed me out.  I have looked into the band and I have not found anything to say that goes against our principles, but it does bare further research.  They were a fun band to watch and Sierra wants to look further into their music.

Now, Relient K.  This was the thing I have looked forward to for YEARS.  When we first got to the House of Blues, we had a pretty good spot...as the concert progressed, we were able to progressively move closer and closer to the front.  My goal was to be able to look up Matthew Thiessens's nose (lead singer).  By the time, RK came out....my goal was COMPLETE!!

Their performance was so personable.  No bad words dropped.  LOADS of energy.  GREAT songs.  GREAT interaction with the crowd.  Just fantastic.  (And Sierra is fairly certain that Matthew Thiessen winked at her).  I had songs I wanted to hear that they did not play (SO many albums, SO many great songs...not enough time) and I had songs I wanted to hear that they DID play.

All in all, it was an exhausting, HOT concert and Sierra and I had the BEST time.  Sierra LOVED it even though when it was all over and we had stood in a hot crowd for 5 hours, movement hurt and was HARD to do....she still LOVED it and I LOVED sharing it with her (even if my aging body craved a SEAT).

Here are the pictures I took last night!
